The Wednesday's Child program at her NBC station was one of several around the country which were sponsored by Freddie Mac, and focused on spotlighting foster children who were eligible for adoption. She cites her work with the Wednesday's Child adoption initiative as some of the most meaningful work she has done in her career. Janice recognizes the platform she has, and uses it to make a difference. Guiding by example is one of the best ways to inspire. "People need to know it's hard for everybody, but it can be done", Janice says. She actually did not like math as a kid, but after she realized how necessary it was to achieve her goals, she made it a point to work hard and improve at this skill. She often explains to children how fear of doing hard things should never stop them from trying. Janice believes that developing relationships with young people and telling them your own story is one of the best ways to encourage students to pursue their dreams. For Janice, the experience of working with Black and female role models in the National Weather Service affirmed her choice of career path and showed her the same. Thus, I really want students to see as much as they can early on to know that anything is possible.and my experience and career path is just one example of that. However, the benefit of hindsight is that I have learned that it is definitely possible to have a successful career doing what you love, even if you don't get there in a typical way. One of the challenges I had early on in my career was that I didn't know of anyone else who had even a similar career track and family situation as mine. As a female meteorologist who has followed a very non-traditional career path, one of my own passions is getting out to talk to students of all ages and backgrounds to show them what I do and how I got where I am today.
